Iranian Hackers Shut Down British Power Plant for Four Days
Iran-linked hackers shut down a power plant in the UK for four days.
The incident was reported by British newspaper The Telegraph.
According to the report, the cyberattack knocked the facility offline, and it took staff four days to restore operations.
The incident did not affect the UK’s power supply because the plant has a relatively small generating capacity.
British authorities did not disclose the name of the facility for security reasons. The attack was reported to the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).
The publication noted that the attack on the British power plant took place around the same time as a series of cyberattacks targeting water facilities in 12 U.S. states.
U.S. officials initially described the incidents as the work of ‘malicious cyber actors.’ However, sources within the U.S. government later told the media that the attacks were likely linked to Iran.
The Telegraph noted that this could be the first known case of Iran-linked hackers shutting down a British power plant.
Notably, a month before the incident, the UK Cabinet Office published an official risk assessment estimating the likelihood of cyberattacks targeting domestic infrastructure at between 5% and 25%. It also warned that AI could automate the launch of cyberattacks, making them faster and more effective while lowering the barrier to entry.
A government spokesperson emphasized that the UK’s energy system remains highly resilient, and that relevant authorities are working closely with the energy sector to protect critical infrastructure.

The attack caused disruptions to passenger check-in and boarding systems at London Heathrow Airport and other European airports.
