Updated FN SCAR Rifle Lineup Unveiled in U.S. at Previous Model Prices

FN America unveiled an updated SCAR rifle lineup during an event at a shooting range in South Carolina.

The new generation includes more than two dozen upgrades, built-in suppressor compatibility, and maintains the same pricing as previous models, The Firearm Blog reports.

The most notable technical improvement is a lightweight, two-piece bolt system with a hydraulic buffer – an internal shock absorber that reduces recoil during firing. This upgrade is especially noticeable on the 7.62mm platform.

Other updates include a longer rifle receiver with M-LOK mounting points on three sides, making it easy to attach accessories such as lights, lasers, and foregrips. The traditional reciprocating charging handle has been replaced with a fixed, non-reciprocating design so it does not interfere while shooting. The gas block is now covered by a new 360-degree heat shield that protects the shooter from burns during prolonged firing.

The SCAR 16S and 17S models now feature an improved single-stage trigger, while the SCAR 20S is equipped with a new two-stage trigger. All versions offer fully ambidextrous controls, allowing comfortable use by both right- and left-handed shooters. The fire selector can be configured in 16 different positions.

The rifles now also support standard AR-pattern pistol grips, feature improved sling attachment points, and allow for quick barrel changes.

Suppressor compatibility is integrated at the factory. The models use standard thread patterns – 1/2×28 for 5.56 mm and 5/8×24 for 7.62 mm – enabling the use of modern suppressors with forward gas venting. FN also plans to release its own QD762 and QD556 suppressors in the second quarter of 2026.

Key elements from previous generations have been retained, including chrome-lined barrels, steel magazines, a monolithic top rail, and a short-stroke gas-piston system with a two-position regulator.

According to FN, the new SCAR rifles successfully completed 16,000 rounds of testing without critical failures.

One drawback is the absence of the iconic folding SCAR iron sights. Marketing materials show standard flip-up sights similar to those made by Magpul, and FN has not yet confirmed which sights will be included with production models.

The lineup includes three models: the SCAR 16S (5.56×45 mm), SCAR 17S (7.62×51 mm or 6.5 Creedmoor), and SCAR 20S (7.62×51 mm or 6.5 Creedmoor). Their weights are 3.9 kg, 4.0 kg, and 4.8 kg respectively.

FN states that the updates add more than $900 in value through new features, while keeping prices in line with current SCAR models – approximately $3,500–$4,000 depending on the version. The SCAR 17S will be the first to go on sale in the first quarter of 2026, with the remaining models and suppressors scheduled for release in the second quarter.
