Thailand and Cambodia Exchange Airstrikes and Rocket Fire

Clashes erupted between Thailand and Cambodia on the morning of July 24, with both sides exchanging airstrikes and artillery fire.

The incident has been reported by CNN and documented by observers on social media.

Local residents have shared dramatic footage of explosions and gunfire, while both governments accuse each other of initiating the hostilities.

Early Thursday morning, Thai military forces reported that Cambodian troops had shelled their base in an area near the ancient Ta Muen Thom temple, located on disputed territory in southern Thailand’s Surin Province and northwestern Cambodia.

Thailand claims that Cambodia deployed drones near the temple before sending in armed troops. Cambodia, however, denies this, insisting that it was Thai soldiers who opened fire first.

Cambodian troops were also accused of firing heavy weapons into a civilian area in the neighboring Kap Choeng district of Thailand’s Surin Province. There are reports of civilian casualties.

Following the incident, Royal Thai Air Force F-16 fighter jets launched a series of strikes on Cambodian armed forces.

Later, Thai military officials announced the “destruction” of two regional Cambodian army command posts.

Footage later surfaced online showing Cambodia using multiple rocket launch systems.

Reports now indicate clashes at six locations along the disputed border between the two countries. Thailand has also closed all border crossings with Cambodia.

The outbreak of fighting took place just a day after a Thai soldier lost a leg due to an anti-personnel mine explosion on the border, worsening diplomatic relations between Bangkok and Phnom Penh.

Thailand accuses its neighbor of newly planting mines along the border territory, but Cambodia has denied these allegations.
