Poland to Purchase $55 Million Worth of Drones in 2025
The Polish Ministry of Defense is set to invest $55 million in 2025 for the large-scale purchase of drones to strengthen its armed forces.
According to the official website of the Ministry of Defense, this marks the beginning of a “drone revolution” within the Polish military. The initiative was launched with the signing of a series of agreements between Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk and leading military research institutes.
As part of the effort, a dedicated program has been introduced to ensure the rapid integration of combat drones into operational units, enhancing the military’s technological edge and battlefield capabilities.
By the end of the year, Poland plans to allocate 200 million zlotys (approximately $55 million) to purchase UAVs, with half of that amount designated for training systems. The total amount may double if domestic manufacturers are able to meet the military’s requirements.
Cezary Tomczyk emphasized that the experience of the war in Ukraine has proven drones to be a decisive factor on the modern battlefield. What was once considered an innovation is now a critical necessity.
Additionally, the government has confirmed plans to establish a Drone Center based at the Technical Institute of the Air Force. The center will focus on the development, testing, and deployment of drones for land, air, and maritime operations as part of the Hornet program.
To streamline the procurement process, bureaucratic procedures will be simplified. Drones that successfully pass testing will be allowed to enter service without the need for lengthy public tenders, thanks to a special legislative initiative.
An important element of the program will be the integration of artificial intelligence, which the AI Implementation Center and the Cyber Defense Command will oversee.
The Ministry emphasized that the war in Ukraine served as a key catalyst for these changes, demonstrating the effectiveness of accessible drone tactics. By this fall, around 90 units of new equipment are expected to be delivered to nine military units for real-world testing. These models will be selected from among 455 innovative proposals submitted, over 100 of which involve unmanned systems.
Meanwhile, “drone laboratories” will be established within Polish Armed Forces units, where drones will be designed, assembled, and upgraded, including through the use of 3D printing technology.
Militarnyi previously reported that the Polish Armaments Agency has signed a framework agreement with manufacturers from the WB Group for the supply of Warmate loitering munitions for the national army.
