Germany to Supply Two Patriot Systems to Ukraine from Its Own Reserves
The German government will transfer two additional Patriot batteries to Ukraine, with the delivery of the first elements set to begin in the coming days.
The press service of the German Federal Ministry of Defence reported on this.
As part of the first stage of the military equipment transfer, the Bundeswehr will deliver additional launchers for the Patriot air defense system in the coming days. During the second stage, which will take place over the next two to three months, other components of the systems will be delivered.
The Ministry of Defence noted that those systems were originally scheduled for technical maintenance in the short and medium term, but they would be prepared for operation in Ukraine and handed over in a fully operational state.
In agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense, it has been decided that, in exchange for the systems being transferred, Germany will be the first country to receive the latest generation Patriot systems in an expedited manner. They will be purchased with funds from the German government.
This mechanism is based on prior negotiations between the federal government and the U.S. administration. Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius and U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset initiated the alignment process on July 14, 2025, with the goal of significantly strengthening Ukraine’s air defense.
“Since the beginning of discussions at the NATO level, Germany has expressed its readiness to support Ukraine with additional Patriot systems, providing individual components of the systems. A prerequisite for this was the agreement with the American manufacturer to deliver new systems as quickly as possible in response, so that we could continue fulfilling our NATO commitments. This agreement from the U.S. side is in place. Therefore, Germany can provide Ukraine with launchers first, and later, other elements of the Patriot systems. Once again, we see that Germany is unquestionably Ukraine’s strongest partner in the field of air defense,” said Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius.
The German government is transferring Ukraine its fourth and fifth Patriot air defense systems since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, becoming the largest donor of these systems, surpassing the country of origin – the United States.
