Norway to Strengthen Ukraine’s Air Defense with Joint Missile Production and Patriot System Purchase
Norway has announced its readiness to provide additional funding to Ukraine to strengthen its air defense, in close coordination with Germany.
Suspilne reported on this.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre made this statement during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday, July 21.
“Norway is ready to provide significant additional funding for Ukraine’s air defense. We are now planning to do this in very direct cooperation with Germany, a very reliable partner in this matter,” Støre emphasized.
He noted that the defense industries of both countries are already actively cooperating in the production of air defense systems and missiles for Ukraine.
“We are also discussing how we can supply systems like the Patriot to Ukraine, which is extremely important. But for this, we also need more partners. So, we need the United States, and we rely on the president, who has clearly expressed this, to quickly reach an agreement on fulfilling their role,” Støre said.
These statements come amid growing international support for strengthening Ukraine’s air defense program and efforts to create the Air Defense Coalition involving several European countries and the United States.
Military Assistance from Norway in the Field of Air Defense
On July 10, it was reported that Norway committed to financing the purchase of one Patriot air defense system for Ukraine.
At the end of June, it was announced that the Norwegian government, in cooperation with the Kongsberg company and Ukraine, will co-finance and jointly develop missiles for the NASAMS air defense system.
A key milestone in this partnership will be the implementation of new projects focused on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and fostering joint initiatives in the defense industry.
The integration of Ukrainian missiles into the Norwegian missile system was confirmed in February 2025, when Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, stated in an interview with Euractiv that the company was establishing a joint venture in Ukraine to expand missile production for NASAMS using Ukrainian technology.
It was noted that the project involved serial production; however, the type or model of the missiles was not disclosed.
